The Latest Scam: Fake IRS Letters and Emails
IRS impersonation scams are becoming more sophisticated. The newest trend involves fraudulent IRS communications – delivered via email, phone calls, or even seemingly official mail – that attempt to intimidate individuals into providing personal information or making payments.
These scams often include:
- Official-looking IRS logos and language
- Threats of legal action, arrest, or investigation
- Payment requests via gift cards, wire transfers, or cryptocurrency
- Demands for personal data such as Social Security numbers, banking information, or account logins
In some cases, scammers use certified mail or emails that mimic IRS formatting to add legitimacy. Emails often link to fake IRS websites designed to collect sensitive information.
Warning Signs of a Scam
Watch for the following red flags:
- Demands for immediate payment or urgent action
- Threats involving law enforcement or immigration
- Unusual payment methods (gift cards, Venmo, Apple Pay, or crypto)
- Messages with grammar issues, spelling errors, or questionable sender addresses
- Hyperlinks that direct you to non-IRS or imitation websites
How to Protect Yourself
- Don’t act under pressure. The IRS does not demand immediate payment or request sensitive information by phone, email, or text.
- Avoid clicking links or downloading attachments in unsolicited communications claiming to be from the IRS.
- Verify independently. When in doubt, contact the IRS directly at (800) 829-1040 to confirm legitimacy.
- Safeguard your information. Only share personal or financial data with verified, trusted sources.
- Report suspicious activity to the IRS at phishing@irs.gov.
If You Think You’ve Been Targeted
If you receive a suspicious letter, email, or phone call:
- Do not respond. Hang up or delete the message.
- Reach out to Senter CPA. We can help assess the situation and guide your next steps.
- Report the incident to both the IRS and the Federal Trade Commission (FTC).
