So You Filed Your Taxes… Now What? (AKA: The Great Refund Watch Begins)

You did it! You gathered the documents, answered the questions, signed where needed, and got your tax return filed. If we helped prepare it for you, we can confidently say you handled your part like a pro. Now comes the part nobody loves but everyone participates in anyway: waiting for your refund.

If you’ve already checked your bank account a few times today just to “see if anything magically appeared,” you’re in good company. The IRS does give you a few reliable ways to track what’s happening with your refund so you’re not left guessing.

You can use the IRS “Where’s My Refund” tool online without even logging in. There’s also an IRS Online Account, which now includes an option to get email updates when your refund status changes. That means fewer manual checks and slightly less refreshing your browser than you might otherwise be doing.

If you prefer phone updates, you can call the IRS refund hotline at 800-829-1954, or if you filed an amended return, 866-464-2050. There’s also the IRS mobile app if you like handling things from your phone.

In most cases, refunds are issued in less than 21 days, especially for electronically filed returns. You can usually start checking your status within about 24 hours after e-filing. That said, timing can vary depending on the details of your return and whether anything needs additional review.

Some of the most common reasons for delays include small but important errors like missing signatures or math mistakes, claiming the Additional Child Tax Credit which requires extra processing time, not including direct deposit information, filing an amended return, or requesting injured spouse relief. In those cases, the IRS simply needs more time to verify everything.

We know the waiting period can feel a little like tracking a package that refuses to update its location. The best approach is to check occasionally rather than constantly, make sure your filing information was accurate, and let the system work through its process.

If anything looks off or you’re unsure about the status of your return, that’s exactly what we’re here for. At Senter CPA, we don’t just prepare your return and disappear until next year. We’re available to help you understand what’s happening, answer questions, and make the entire process smoother from start to finish.

And when that refund finally arrives, consider it the official “all clear” signal until we do this again next year.
