Why You Should Get an IRS IP PIN
Protect Yourself from Tax Identity Theft
At Senter CPA, we’re serious about protecting your personal and financial information. One simple but powerful way you can protect your tax identity is by getting an IRS Identity Protection PIN (IP PIN).
Here’s what it is, why it matters, and how to get one.
What is an IP PIN?
An Identity Protection Personal Identification Number (IP PIN) is a six-digit number issued by the IRS that helps prevent someone else from filing a fraudulent tax return using your Social Security number or Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN). Think of it as a second password for your tax return.
Each year, the IRS generates a new IP PIN for you, and it must be entered when filing your return—whether you’re filing on your own or working with us.
Why You Should Get One
Prevent Tax Fraud
Tax identity theft is on the rise. If someone gets access to your Social Security number, they could file a fraudulent return to claim a refund. With an IP PIN in place, only someone who has that code can file using your identity.
Get Peace of Mind
It’s frustrating and time-consuming to fix tax ID theft. With an IP PIN, you proactively reduce your risk and stay ahead of potential scams. It’s especially helpful for:
- Anyone who has experienced identity theft
- Parents or guardians of dependents
- High-income earners or frequent data breach victims
- Anyone wanting an extra layer of protection
Secure Even If You Don’t Owe Taxes
Even if you’re not due a refund, or don’t owe, fraudsters can still file a fake return in your name. An IP PIN protects you whether you’re filing a simple return or a complex one.
How to Get an IP PIN
- Create or Log Into Your IRS Account: Visit the IRS Get an IP PIN page and create an IRS.gov account (or log in if you already have one).
- Verify Your Identity: The IRS will ask for your Social Security number, date of birth, financial account info, and other identifiers.
- Receive Your IP PIN: Once verified, you’ll receive your IP PIN immediately online. Keep it in a safe place—you’ll need it when filing your return.
Never share your IP PIN with anyone except your tax preparer. At Senter CPA, we take every precaution to ensure it’s stored securely and used correctly.
When Do I Need to Enter It?
Each calendar year, your IP PIN will change. You’ll need to retrieve your new PIN each January before filing. If you’re a client of ours, we’ll remind you when the time comes—and make sure it’s applied properly.
Can I Get One for My Child?
Yes! And in fact, children are prime targets for identity theft. You can request an IP PIN for dependents, but you’ll need to use Form 15227 or apply in person with valid documentation. We can help walk you through that process if needed.
Let Us Help
We recommend all clients opt in to the IRS IP PIN program—it’s one of the simplest and most effective ways to protect your tax identity.
